EKG technicians are in high demand! EKG technicians work in physician’s offices, hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare facilities and organizations. EKG technicians also work for insurance companies to provide data for health and life insurance policies. Similar to other growing healthcare professions, the demand for EKG technicians is expected to continue to grow substantially.

This program covers topics and processes critical to conducting and interpreting electrocardiograms (EKGs). To begin, learners will review the anatomy and physiology of the heart. From there, learners will go on to explore the technology used such as the EKG machine. Next, participants will learn how to interpret a rhythm strip. And finally, learners will discover the details of myocardial infarction. Successful completion of this program will help prepare learners to perform the role of EKG technician.

Program Objectives

After completing this program, learners will be able to:

  • Use the application of electrophysiologic principles of cardiac conduction in the body's anatomy and physiology.
  • Identify appropriate placement of lead during EKG readings.
  • Make a proper evaluation of EKG rhythm strips after establishing standard criteria for wave-forms and intervals.
  • Give a proper analysis of EKG rhythm strips for common dysrhythmias.
  • Analyze various EKG rhythms, their rate, and breaks.
  • Apply the understanding of the technicality of the EKG machine to its use in health care.
  • Give a full description of the functions, terminologies, and types of pacemakers.
  • Describe what diagnostic electrocardiography is about in terms of goals, procedures, types, indications, and contraindications.
  • Understand how to interpret a 12-lead EKG strip.
  • Give a detailed explanation of myocardial infarction, its physiology, symptoms, and EKG interpretation.
  • Describe common cardiac medication and its application.

There's no doubt that the need for an EKG technician is fast rising and thorough training for them to measure up for such responsibility.

The various steps associated with using an EKG machine often start from understanding some basic concepts about the heart, the set-up of the EKG machine, and in some cases learning some of the disease conditions associated with the heart- those whose treatment involves the use of EKG.

The human heart has a structure that enables it to function in its capacity as the sole circulatory organ. Four chambers are the right atrium, which receives non-oxygenated blood from the body, the left atrium, which receives oxygenated blood from the lungs. The right ventricle pumps blood, mixes with oxygen, and the left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body.

An EKG technician training entails profound exposition into the electro-physiological principles of cardiac conduction; The heart has a network of muscle cells that send signals to the other part of the heart muscle, which causes contraction and makes up the heart cardiac conduction system. The central part of this system is the SA node, AV node, the bundle of HIS, and the Purkinje fibers.

The SA node starts the process of cardiac conduction by making the atrial muscle contract. The signals generated then travel through the bundle of HIS to the AV node and then to the Purkinje fibers causing ventricular contraction. These signals are created on a graph called an electrocardiogram or EKG.

The high demand for EKG technicians in hospitals, clinics, medical and health care facilities, organizations, etc., is influencing EKG technician training's popularity. A trained EKG technician can also work for insurance companies who operate life assurance to provide and confirm data on health and life.

By estimates made from research results on the health care sector, the growth rate, and needs, the demand for EKG technicians and experts demand is expected to grow tremendously in years to come. The EKG technician training program covers the aspect of ensuring accurate and consistent EKG readings. Students are taught topics, processes, and techniques, particularly the conduction and interpretation of electrocardiograms (EKGs).

Learners will study both the anatomy and physiology of the heart at the start of their training. A deep understanding of the heart's structure and function will help an EKG technician deliver his roles correctly. EKG technician training also entails exploring the technology used in the design and operation of the EKG machine. Learners would interpret rhythm strips as part of their training. They will also be trained to discover the details of myocardial infarction. Upon completing this program, learners would have had all the required skills and expertise to become professional EKG technicians.

Certifications

After the successful completion of the EKG technician training program, there are various EKG technician National Certification exams that are available to students for the acquisition of their certificate:

ASPT – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam can be proctored at a local testing facility and are open to all students who complete this program 

NHA Certified EKG Technician exam can be proctored at a local testing center and are available to all students who complete this program

These courses are offered by Texas A&M University Texarkana, in partnership with Job Training Courses (JTC). Texas A&M University-Texarkana is a regionally accredited institution and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

+ Are there available financial aids (FAFSA, Pell Grant, etc)?
We currently do not have support for federal or state grants. However, we offer zero interest payment plans for up to 12 months. Students can take advantage of these payment plans without worrying about credit check.
